Artificial intelligence (AI) is a new and expanding field that brings excitement and provides a window into what other technological advances the future holds. For some, the implementation of AI in helping with everyday tasks such as shopping, studying, and getting questions answered has been seamless, providing proof to the argument that, in general, artificial intelligence can supplement our day to day lives. For students especially, AI, specifically Open AI’s ChatGPT, has been a tool used over the past few year for homework help, writing assistance, and even language learning, but a question is raised regarding how much students harnessing the powers of this tool really know about what they are working with?
After conducting a multiple interviews with different students around campus, here are a couple of answers we received when asking “Do you use AI, if so, do you know how it works and what do you use it for?”
” I am not really sure how exactly [ChatGPT] works, but it has saved me a lot of time making outlines for papers that I write and making notes for tests that I had to study for last year.” – Tommy, 19, TRU Student
” I use AI but only to help with making notes and getting explanations on things that my professors have gone over in class that I didn’t really understand. I have no clue how it works and I don’t really care because it is very useful.” – Ranjeet, 18, TRU Student.
Students around campus are seemingly not worried about how AI works, only that it works to help them and provides answers to the seemingly endless amount of questions that the students have. Furthermore, the ways that AI can help students further their learning and understanding seem limitless and only supplemental. As AI gets more advanced and can further simulate human cognition, we should be excited as to see what the technology hold and how else it can benefit students.
